Student Printing At ASU

Several years ago, ASU and its departments began charging students for any documents and webpages printed on ASU printers. This was done to control costs.

Setting up your computer to print to ASU printers will vary according to computer and location. Engineering uses the "Pharos" software while the Computing Commons and other "UCC Computing Sites" use a different system. The only Engineering printer that is available to students is the one in ECG 120.

Setup for ASU's "UCC Computing Sites" Printers

Setup for Engineering's Printer, for Microsoft Windows

For a Windows-based computer, download and install the "Pharos" software onto your computer. The software is available here, as a "zip" file. Save the file anywhere on your computer when asked where to save it. Once the download is finished, double-click on the icon for the saved file. Inside the zip file, you will see an executable file. Double-click on the executable file and follow the directions given by the installer.

Setup for Engineering's Printer, for the Apple Macintosh

For a Macintosh, there is a different procedure. Note that the Mac's operating system must be "OS X" or later.

  • Click on the "Apple" icon
  • Select "System Preferences"
  • Select "Print & Fax"
  • Click on "+" to add a printer
  • Select "IP Printer"

  • On the resulting window, enter the following information:
    • For the "Protocol," select "Line Printer Daemon - LPD"
    • For the "Address," enter "asupharos-tempe1.asu.edu"
    • For the "Queue," enter "ecg120q"
    • For "Print Using," choose "Select a Driver To Use" and then select "HP 8150 Series"

  • To setup double-sided printing:
    • Click on the "Add" button
    • Within the "Installation Options" section, click on "Duplex Unit."

  • Click on the "Continue" button to complete the setup
  • You are now ready to print

Please note that the LPD method, above, allows anyone to print your file as long as they are willing to pay the printing costs.
