Machine Shop: Researchers
Historically, the Machine Shop has been available to researchers at no cost. As of January 1, 2009 the shop will start charging a $15.00 per/hr labor fee. This is the second step in restructuring the shops business model. Jobs will continue to be worked on in the order they are received with no allowance for special priority needs.
All jobs will have cost estimates sent out for approval. No jobs will be placed in the the "queue" and no material will be ordered until approval from the professor is e-mailed to dennis.golabiewski@asu.edu
To meet increasing demands for quality and performance, the Machine Shop has recently instituted a 100% quality control system whereby all jobs go through a final inspection process to verify dimensions and tolerances per customer specifications. Finally, an electronic satisfaction survey is e-mailed to the customers for improvement feedback. Your response is always appreciated.
The first step approved by the Dean's office is to implement a chargeback high priority job request and will be charged at the going rate.
The first step for all jobs is to meet with the shop manager - Dennis Golabiewski
Standard Jobs for Researchers
- Standard jobs are worked FIFO (First In, First Out), except for high priority jobs.
- Faculty may use students to prepare and submit jobs, HOWEVER, all of these students must have first completed the one hour machine shop orientation session and be registered with the machine shop before we can accept any job requests from them!
- The shop supervisor will provide an estimated date to completion when the job is submitted. The estimated date to completion will depend on the number of high priority jobs- the larger number of high priority jobs the longer the estimated date to completion for the normal jobs.
- The number of machinists dedicated to standard jobs will depend on the number of high priority jobs in the queue. High priority jobs always take precedence over standard jobs, so that the larger number of high priority jobs in the queue, the fewer the number of machinists dedicated to standard jobs, However, at least one machinist will always be dedicated to standard jobs at all times.
- There is no guarantee that the job can be completed within your required time frame, but we will do our best.
High Priority Jobs for Researchers
High priority jobs are those with time constraints that must be completed as quickly as possible.
- The first step is to meet with the shop manager - Dennis Golabiewski. Inform him you need a job completed at high priority and be prepared to provide an account number (area/org) to bill against. (Note) at this time only RID or IIA local accounts may be used to pay for this service. Refer account questions to Larry Miller
- We will guarantee that we will get your job done within the time frame required by you as long as it is reasonable to do so. (e.g., a job you say you must have within 3 days that requires 4 days worth of labor is not reasonable).
- Jobs go into the job queue first come first serve ahead of the normal jobs, including 490 student projects. 490 student jobs may never be high priority.
- The shop manager will provide an estimated time to completion after the job and accurate drawings are submitted.
- At the completion of the job, the requester will be provided a bill for payment. Failure to make timely payments can result in the loss of privilege to use the shop!
- Up to 4 machinists will be dedicated to high priority jobs
The current shop fee for HIGH PRIORITY is $50 per hour and is applicable only to high priority jobs at this time. ALL PRICES ARE SUJECT TO CHANGE.
