Transition from Fulton to UTO Webserver
To help facilitate the transition of your website from www.fulton.asu.edu to the UTO web hosting services, Marc Lesure will be the project lead and your single point of contact from now on. In addition, he will help you move your website to the UTO web server.
In order to start the process, please request a UTO web hosting account. The information page has information on the services available with an account, and you can request an account by clicking on the page's "Web Hosting Account Request" link. You will use your "asurite" username and password to login. You will then be prompted to fill out an online form, with the end result being a new website owned by the account that you have just created.
The online form has four (4) required fields.
For the "department or group that will be the primary user of this web hosting account," enter your department's name, such as "Fulton/DEWSC/CREATE."
For the "username for the administrative account," do not use your "asurite" username. Instead, enter a username containing five to eight letters and digits that begins with a letter. Please use only lower-case letters, and use an "x" in place of any vowels. This will make it easier for you to remember the correct username while making it harder for hackers to guess the username.
Enter your own email address as the "contact email address for the webmaster of the site." For example: JohnDoe@asu.edu.
Enter the "domain name" for the site. The domain name is the base address for the website; for example, "www.asu.edu."
There are four "domain families" for you to choose from.
- faculty.asu.edu, for faculty; example: johndoe.faculty.asu.edu
- personal.asu.edu, for staff;example: johndoe.personal.asu.edu
- courses.asu.edu, for courses;example: ece350doe.courses.asu.edu
- club.asu.edu, for student organizations; example: sha.club.asu.edu
After you complete the form, click on the "Submit" button. Once UTO completes your request, they will send you an e-mail with the information used to access your new website. Since it is the beginning of the semester, UTO is backlogged and it may take a few days to complete your request. You can check on the status of your request by clicking on the "My Submitted Forms" link next to the request form. If you do not hear back from UTO within a week, please contact Marc so that he can follow-up with UTO on your behalf.
Once you have received UTO's e-mail, please forward it to Marc if he is coordinating the transition for you. Please also include the full address (URL) of your existing website on www.fulton.asu.edu. Marc will then contact you to schedule a time and date to complete the move. This process will include all of the following tasks:
- Move your webpage(s) to the new site
- Test the new site
- Review the new site
- Configure your old site to automatically send visitors to the new site
- Show you how to maintain your new site
- Turn the new site over to you
For every website to be moved, Marc will contact its owner in the coming weeks to help them through the process. You are welcome to contact Marc at any time as well.
Again, in an effort to minimize the impact on existing websites, and to help ensure a smooth transition to the UTO webservers, we are flexible regarding our 12/31/2009 target date for decommissioning the www.fulton.asu.edu webserver.
If you have any questions about this process, please contact Marc at 5-9135 or marc@asu.edu.
