Several years ago, ASU and its departments began charging students for any documents and webpages printed on ASU printers. This was done to control costs.

Setting up your computer to print to ASU printers will vary according to computer and location. Engineering uses the "Pharos" software while the Computing Commons and other "UCC Computing Sites" use a different system. The only Engineering printer that is available to students is the one in ECG 120.

ETS staff have now been reassigned directly to the departments, thus moving the supply of service closer to the demand and eliminating the delays associated with a central dispatching system.

Engineering Technical Services (ETS) has a Data Communications Group that provides support for the Fulton School of Engineering’s network infrastructure. This includes installation, repair and network management of the College’s Ethernet and ATM networks.

For conference room reservations, contact Engineering Technical Services at 965-2005 or stop by the main office in GWC 112 (Goldwater Building).
Schedule meeting using Outlook (Scheduling instructions).
Each reservation requires professor or departmental approval and they will assume responsibility for use of the room.

Procedure:

Open your Outlook calendar
Click on Plan a Meeting in the drop down menu. Your calendar will open.
Click on Add Others at the bottom of the window. This will open the Global Address list. Type in the room want, using the m.room.erc, m.room.gwc or m.room.istb2. sequence.
Click the room into Required (Outlook 2000) OR Resources (Outlook 98), then click OK. You will now be able to see the conference room you selected.

UTO has made available a new Matlab license for ASU use. To provide an
enterprise Matlab license, UTO combined several current Matlab licenses,
the research license ETS serves to the Ira A. Fulton School was one of

The agreement will permit full-time and part-time staff and faculty to install and use the software on their machines at work and at home. The cost will also cover students who use ASU located machines in sites, labs and classrooms.

**Important Information regarding Microsoft Campus Agreement Media Changes (12/03)

Effective immediately, all Microsoft software which falls under the Microsoft Campus Agreement has been pulled from the Helpdesk media checkout cabinet. ETS and the rest of the University are adhering to Microsoft's request for tighter software distribution and licensing control. The Campus Agreement media and Cd keys will no longer be available to our customers for checkout and installation purposes. Customers requesting the software will need to submit a service request.

Classroom student and instructor pc's are configured to automatically delete any software or configuration changes after a reboot. The instructor does have a partitioned drive which allows long term storage. These are public access computers and this configuration will help maintain a reliable generic build for all users. Students are advised to save data on floppy, AFS space, or use the USB port for external drive attachment.

Overview

The Fulton school has 20 mediated classroom labs. Each lab has computers and audio-visual equipment at the front of the room that is reserved for the use of instructors. Some of the labs also have computers for students' use.

The labs page lists the locations, hours, points of contact and usage restrictions for each lab. It also links to each room's home page, which includes lists of the room's equipment and computers.

Historically, the Machine Shop has been available to researchers at no cost. As of January 1, 2009 the shop will start charging a $15.00 per/hr labor fee. This is the second step in restructuring the shops business model. Jobs will continue to be worked on in the order they are received with no allowance for special priority needs.

Floor plan showing locations of walls and doors
Consider the door type, size, and swing you want. Indicate walls and doors that need to be removed.

Electrical outlets and light switch locations
We need to know the locations of all outlets and voltage/current ratings of each. If not indicated, 120VAC, 20 amps will be assumed. Specify any special power requirements for heavy equipment and the power ratings needed.

Data Protection Features (Snapshot Technology)

Protecting the integrity of the schools important data from accidental deletion of files, application crashes, data corruption and viruses is critical to the Fulton School of Engineering. The NAS filer offers the school this type of data protection by using snapshot technology. Snapshot Technology makes online point-in-time copies of your original data. Snapshots are created for home directories, typically your H: drive, and shared department space, typically your S: drive.

Server Virtualization Basics

Virtualization software such as VMWare, XenWare, and Microsoft's Hyper-V is used to create virtual servers running on blade servers and network storage devices instead of running on their own dedicated, physical machines.

Blades are standard server-class computers except that they do not have their own cases and hard disk drives. The blades are computer boards mounted in racks, and they store their data on network storage devices instead of on hard disks of their own.

Linux is a very secure and stable operating system, provided that it is properly configured. The knowledge and skill required to do this is, unfortunately, not an easy task for novice and even most intermediate users. Therefore, we recommend that Linux systems connected to the Fulton network be configured and secured by ETS.

Internet Explorer 7 Deployment

Engineering Technical Services (ETS) will deploy and automatically install Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 to all Personal Computers with the Fulton Domain using the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Operating System on Friday, November 10, 2006. Not only will this update increase computerized security, but it brings several visual enhancements to the Internet Explorer Interface. After the update if you have any concerns please contact the ETS Helpdesk at 480-965-2968.

ASU Sets 180 Day Password Limit

Increased concern for the safety of university data, personal information, and identity management has prompted ASU to request more frequent replacement of ASURITE passwords. A 180-day time limit on ASURITE passwords has been set as a computing system standard for all ASU campuses. Faculty, staff and students are asked to act promptly to replace outdated passwords by using the Password Changer program (asu.edu/changepassword).

Software Update Services (SUS)

ETS implemented Software Update Services for the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering on August 14th 2003. Software Update Services, referred to as SUS, allows for automatic security patch and critical update delivery to Windows clients running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The service simplifies the process of keeping thousands of Windows computers in the School of Engineering up-to-date with the most critical patches. Currently SUS clients are being configured as part of the RPC virus clean-up process.

Keyless Door Access: ISAAC System Overview

Engineering Technical Services (ETS) in the Fulton School is offering a new, completely managed UNIX virtual server-on-demand environment for Fulton School researchers. This model uses virtualization software, providing researchers with virtual private server hosting features as well as open source research support tools, such as Subversion, Wiki tools, Metadot portal collaboration tools, blade server technology, system administration management, application support, along with 24 x 7 event and performance monitoring services.

We would meet again to determine the changes and adjust the plan the best we can to accommodate you with minimal impact on the schedule. Understand, however, that any significant changes to the remodeling plan must be re-estimated and will quite likely cause delays and change the schedule, depending on where we are in the process.

When estimates are received from the various agencies involved, they will be returned to you to secure funding. A Remodeling Budget Estimates Summary is provided that summarizes all the costs and agencies involved in the project. The total cost is shown in the black box next to the label Estimate Total and includes any labor charges from Facilities Management. The labor column is provided to primarily show how much labor is required on the part the Structures Shop of Engineering Technical Services. You do not get charged for ETS labor.

Desktop PC: Baseline Standards

The goal of establishing baseline standards is to effectively protect and manage the Fulton School’s information resources using technology, tools, standards and well-defined policies, while balancing service expectations and the cost of providing those services.

Baseline Standards consist of three components: PC Hardware Procurement Standards, Fulton Domain participation, and Asset Management. Compliance with baseline standards requires compliance with all components of the program.

The Helpdesk offers a service called PC Asset Care Plan (PAC Plan). The plan offers ETS customers' an alternative to having their personal computers "dropped" at their door. PAC Plan allows individuals within the Fulton School of Engineering the opportunity of having their new personal computer equipment shipped directly to ETS Operations where the equipment is quickly tagged, inventoried, and delivered by ETS Operations.
